Güldem Durmaz was born in 1971 in Paris and lives now in Brussels.
She studied English and Turkish (her parents' language), as well as french literature at the Sorbonne until 1993. She has worked as a film and theatre actress from 1994 on.
In 2001, she wrote and directed a short fiction film, Soför/Chauffeur, shot in the streets of Istanbul with french actor Denis Lavant. In 2002 she directed a second short, Koro (Chorus).
These films, made with support from the Ministère de la Culture de la Communauté française de Belgique, have been selected and rewarded in numerous international festivals (Locarno, Venice, Saint-Petersburg, Amiens, Washington DC...)
In 2004, Güldem Durmaz co-directed, with Bénédicte Liénard and Valérie Vanhoutvinck, a documentary called Pour vivre, j'ai laissé (What I've left behind) shot inside a Brussels facility for refugees.
She also conducts film and theatre workshops in Paris and Brussels, and creates live performances and video installations.
In 2011, she directed Ben/O (I/him), an experimental documentary about kurdish transsexual artist Esmeray.
The last film she directed is a multiscreen movie about sustainable energy, it's called "Ensemble!" (Together) and will be on the screen during 5 years in the Palais des Images of the PASS museum.
She's currently finishing a documentary essay entitled Kazarken (as we dig).
Her work explores the connections between memory, language and cultural or transcultural identities, as she experiments with actors and non-actors, secret or invented languages, spaces and situations both real and oneiric.
