Olivier Borson, a French photographer born in 1963, lives in Reunion Island, Borson has been taking photographs since his adolescence, finding inspiration from his early passion for expedition stories, and later for traveling, medical assistance with mountain expeditions, outdoor racing, and overseas car rallies.
Borson started his professional work 8 years ago doing landscape photography strongly influenced by Michael Kenna. He expanded his portfolio with portraiture by studying with and joining Steve McCurry on photographic expedition in East Asia. Olivier has traveled extensively throughout India and South East Asia with his mentor. From Steve, Olivier has learned how to capture the diversity and dignity within his subjects and how to recognize the ‘fleeting, unguarded moment’ so important in photography. He is fascinated by far away cultures and dedicates himself to immersing into their traditions and daily life, capturing a true and noble portrait.
Recently, he has been assigned by Doctors of the World to photograph poverty and health accessibility in Mayotte Island and Madagascar.
His recent work about Venice came from a slow personal maturation process. For Borson, black and white photography was easier than color as it was his introduction in to the photographic process. Color photography was quite mysterious and difficult to shoot in a tropical island where the colors are always bright and saturated. Borson’s new work is a result of several influences; a personal study of the Dusseldorf photographic school ( Elger Esser, Andreas Gursky), long time exposure (Michael Kenna), and a part of the color process learned from Steve McCurry’s studio.
Venice has been photographed countless times, but it still remains beautifully unique with the colorful palaces, houses, and meandering canals. Borson has captured the quiet atmosphere of the city as would the Venetian citizen who experiences it--after dusk or in early morning and with a personal sense of history and tradition, which is not a visitor’s perspective. And finally, with this portfolio he shares his personal vision of the serene moments, the mysterious, the secretive atmosphere of the powerful historical rulers, and the magnificent architecture. Borson’s hope was to share an original, more uncommom vision, that the city deserves.
